Robin Das steers Newcomers HS to victory over Richmond Hill HS

PSAL High School Cricket at its best once again.

May 30, 2008

Robin Das, the PSAL’s Cricket Program most accomplished batsman, steered his team, Newcomers HS, to victory over Richmond Hill HS in their semi-final match played Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Baisley Pond Park, Queens, New York.

Robin scored a superb 44 runs not out in leading his team to victory. It was a gem of an inning. Robin demonstrated why he is the best batsman in PSAL cricket. You will not find a better inning in any form of cricket considering the position his team was in when he came to the wicket.

Robin came to the wicket with his team reeling at 18 runs for the loss of 3 wickets and with Mahandrana Toolsie on a hat-trick. The Richmond Hill bowler (Mahandrana Toolsie) was on fire. He clean bowled Rayhan and Tuhin Ahmed with consecutive deliveries, knocking the later middle stump out of the ground approximately four yards back. However, Robin Das rose to the occasion and defended his stumps well.

After a couple more overs, Newcomers HS lost another wicket and found themselves in further trouble -- the score was 29 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.

The inform Azmain Hossain then joined Robin Das at the wicket. Azmain scored a century in this previous inning – 102 vs. Stuyvesant HS -- the only century of the tournament to date.

The pair put on a masterful batting display and added 82 runs for the fifth wicket. However, with the score on 111 runs, Newcomers HS lost the wicket of Azmain for a well played 34 runs.

Captain, Dominic Gomes, joined Robin Das and the pair took Newcomers to victory with four balls to spare.

Coming into the game everyone was expecting a war and these two teams did not disappoint. Those present at the game felt this should have been the championship game.

As good as Newcomers HS was throughout the season they knew this will be a hard fought match. Richmond Hill HS was playing their best cricket towards the end of the season and in the play-offs. In their previous encounter in the regular season, Richmond Hill HS defeated Newcomers HS by 25 runs.

This match was originally scheduled for May 27, 2008, but had to be rescheduled because of rain. In the May 27 th game Richmond Hill were in serious trouble at 70 runs for 8 wickets when the rain came.

The coaching staff of Newcomers HS was visibly upset because the game had to start from scratch again.

Richmond Hill took first strike and scored 117 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Jason Evan and Dinesh Ravichandran were the leading scorers for Richmond Hill with 30 runs and 19 runs respectively.

Newcomers replied with 119 runs for the lost of 5 wickets. Robin Das 44 not out and Azmain Hossain 34. Newcomers won the match by 5 wickets.

Newcomers HS advanced to the final and will play John Adams HS in the championship game on Sunday June 1, 2008 at Gateway Park, Brooklyn
