North West Region Profile

The North West Region (NWR) comprises of Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Northern California. Currently there are four Leagues with over 75 Clubs that are members of USACA. Though there are other leagues operating in the region, they have not as yet applied for membership with USACA.

Bay Area Cricket Alliance started in 1999 and has grown by leaps and bounds since then to become one of the best organized cricket leagues in the US. BACA currently has 16 teams and more than 200 members play in this League.

The League cricket is played April through October each year followed by Knockout competition for the league teams. The crikcet grounds are obtained from schools with the help of Parks and Recreation Departments, County, School Districts and local committees. As of now BACA league cricket is played on ten different grounds from San Jose to Sacramento. In most instances the grounds are shared by two teams, at least.

In addition to above mentioned League games, BACA promotes cricket by organizing tournaments and parallel activities for its members. It hosts a variety other Cricketing Events by inviting teams from all over the US and sends its representative teams to play in other states. The organization is constantly working hard to promote the game at all levels, particularly in schools. In 2000 BACA started Youth Cricket program. The Summer Cricket Camp for Youth was great success. Nearly thirty children in the age of 10-13 years were part of that program in 2002. Coaches were provided by the organization to infuse the art of playing cricket. Encouraged by the success of this event, BACA is planning to host such events more often.

In addition to league cricket, the premier event, BACA organizes Cricket Festival to mark the Independence day celebrations, Golden Gate Cricket Tournament and All Rounder competition each year. Behind all this success is a lot of support from the City of San Jose and the City of Milpitas. These tournament provides a great platform popularizing the game in USA.

California Cricket League is a Winter League that helps provide year round cricket in the Bay Area.

California Cricket League Youth Development Program is designed to provide cricket coaching/training/games for all participants of 7 to 13 and 14 to 19 years of age. The purpose of the above program is to:

Provide after school and weekend healthy recreational activities to the participants.
Keep kids and teens from involving themselves in anti-social activities and keep themselves busy on a sports field rather than loitering on streets.
Develop discipline, organization, team work and a gentleman behavior.

The Northern California Cricket Association was started in 1892 and has matured since then to become one of the biggest cricket leagues in the US. It currently has 36 teams and nearly a thousand members playing in four divisions. These members come from all over the Bay Area - from as far north as Davis, to Fresno in the south, and represent all cricket-playing nations of the world.

The league season consisting of typically 16 games per team, begins in April and continues into November when play-offs are held. With the help of local cities, schools, and Parks and Recreation Departments, NCCA Clubs have 20 cricket grounds in the Bay Area. The NCCA provides the framework for cricket to be played in the Bay Area by organizing games and activities for its members. In addition, it hosts a variety of visiting teams from all over the world and sends its representative teams to play in other states and countries. It is constantly striving to promote the game at all levels, particularly in schools.

It also has hosted the prestigious National Inter-League Tournament every year during the Labor Day weekend. Since 1997, each year, eight premier teams from different parts of USA have participated in the Tournament. Support from the City of Sunnyvale and the City of Santa Clara were a key ingredient to the success of each of the past tournaments, along with sponsorship from companies like Kingfisher Premium Lager, ICIM-RPG, and Challenger Systems. The tournament provides a great venue for showcasing cricket and helps popularize the game in USA.

NCCA continues to grow rapidly, adding new Clubs each year, and welcomes all aspiring cricketers in the region of Northern California to be a part of this visionary Cricket Association.

The NorthWest Cricket League (NWCL) was founded in early 1995 through the efforts of a handful of dedicated individuals. Their love for the game was motivation enough to put in hours of hard work and travel in meeting together and formulating a sound organizational base for the league. The founding clubs were, Beaverton CC, Microsoft CC, Multnomah CC (then named Lake Oswego CC), Portland (then named Star CC), Seattle CC, and WSU CC. These clubs had existed and played friendly matches against one another in years prior to the formation of the league. But, the formation and existence of the NWCL gave them the structure and opportunity to enhance the amount and level of cricket played in the Pacific Northwest.

Through the years since its inception, NWCL's existence has been punctuated by ups and downs, but it has survived and become stronger. Change has been one constant mantra in the league. The competition format has changed almost every year. The By-laws, which form the cornerstone for the administration of the league, have been overhauled a couple of times and continue to be modified every now and then. Most of the teams in the league have changed the fields that they play. Indeed, the league has yet to crown a repeat Champion team!

Nevertheless, the league has grown with the addition of more new clubs in the last couple of years, Indopak CC, Gresham CC, King County CC and DrugStore CC, and an increased membership roster of the veteran clubs. In the most recent season there were 12 total teams in the league. As we go to press there is talks of at least 4 more clubs interested in joining the league. The future of cricket in the Pacific North West looks bright!!
