The
New York Metropolitan and District Cricket Association
was formed in 1879 and its foundation members were General Electric

Brooklyn C.C. and Staten Island C.C. The majority of the players in
the Philadelphia area were mill workers who were immigrants from
Nottingham and Yorkshire in England.
Staten

the help of a group of tennis players on Staten Island. Walker park
which the home of the club was named in memory of R. St. George Walker,
then president of the cricket and tennis club and who died in combat
during World War 1.
An
attractive scene was presented at the parade grounds behind Prospect
Park on weekends and holidays when clubs such as Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Kings County and Bedford pitched their tents and proceeded to play ball.
The
first President of the league was Rev. W.S. Rainford and other organizers
were C.A. McNully,Jerome Flannery, Harry Manley and Clifford Turner.More

are Dereck Scott, Clement "Busta" Lawrence, Presidents, and
Stephen Gaskin who was Treasurer for fourteen years.
The Metropolitan

team was unbeaten.
The league
