HISTORY

The New York Metropolitan and District Cricket Association was formed in 1879 and its foundation members were General Electric C.C.,  Fairmount Cricket Club, both of Philadelphia, Paterson C.C., Brooklyn C.C. and Staten Island C.C. The majority of the players in the Philadelphia  area were mill workers who were immigrants from Nottingham and Yorkshire in England.
Staten Island Cricket Club is our oldest club and it was formed in 1873 with the help of a group of tennis players on Staten Island. Walker park which the home of the club was named in memory of R. St. George Walker,  then president of the cricket and tennis club and who died in combat during World War 1.
An attractive scene was presented at the parade grounds behind Prospect Park on weekends and holidays when clubs such as Brooklyn, Manhattan, Kings County and Bedford pitched their tents and proceeded to play ball.
The first President of the league was Rev. W.S. Rainford and other organizers were C.A. McNully,Jerome Flannery, Harry Manley and Clifford Turner.More recent officers who have made invaluable contributions to the league are Dereck Scott, Clement "Busta"  Lawrence, Presidents, and Stephen Gaskin who was Treasurer for fourteen years.

The Metropolitan league has been a leader in New York cricket having won the seven team Inter League competition in 1989, 1990,1992,1993,1994,1995 and 1999. There was a period of over three years during which time the team  was unbeaten.

The league consists of nineteen clubs and twenty teams, twelve in Division 1 and eight in Division 2. At the end of each season the the two last place teams in Division 1 are demoted and the best two teams of  Division 2 are promoted. Our players hail from Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana, Jamaica, England, Pakistan, India, Grenada, St. Vincent, Australia, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Barbados.

The league also sponsors two netball teams which are members of one of our cricket clubs and is represented by some of the elite players in the USA.
