Trinidad Captures Nassau's 2001 Super 4 Title

Fine performances from Colville Brown (35 runs & 4 for 31), Daryl Roopchand (72) and three spectacular catches by Mahadeo Bodoe helped Sandra's Travel - Trinidad Sports Club captured the Nassau Cricket League / Western Union 2001 Super 4 Title in the final versus Richmond Hill Cricket Club that was played at Bay Park, East Rockaway Sunday, August 26.

The experienced and talented Trinidad Sports Club group, with four former national players from Trinidad and Tobago (Sheldon Gomes, Mahadeo Bodoe, Daryl Roopchand and Premnath Ramnath), was a bit too much for Richmond Hill Cricket Club on Sunday. A notable absentee for Richmond Hill Cricket Club was their captain Shameer Sadloo who was unavailable because of family commitment. Nevertheless, Trinidad had all the right stuff in this year's Super 4 final. Those present saw excellent batting, top quality spinners and fantastic fielding. This cricket team is like a well-oiled machine and is playing their best cricket in years.

In a game that was well attended and a beautiful day for cricket, Trinidad took first strike. They opened with Tony Rampersad and R. Sookoo. With the score on 22 Trinidad suffered two early setbacks, losing the wickets of Sookoo and former national Trinidad & Tobago player, Mahadeo Bodoe, in the same over. Sookoo was bowled for 3 and Bodoe was brilliantly caught at first slip without scoring. Both wickets went to Dereck McDonald.

Daryl Roopchand joined Tony Rampersad and the pair saw the score reached 94 before Tony Rampersad was caught off the bowling of Imran Ali for a sensible 45. Colville Brown and Daryl added 74 for the fourth wicket before Colville Brown was bowled by David Fingal for 35 - the score 168 for 4.

Daryl Roopchand, who played a scintillating inning as usual, was next to go, bowled by David Fingal for a well-played 72. The Trinidad inning soon came to a close. They reached 204 for 6 in their allotted 40 overs. The not out batsmen were Premnath Ramnath on 21 and Sheldon Gomes on 6. Richmond Hill's most successful bowlers were David Fingal with 3 for 37 and Dereck McDonald with 2 for 26.

When it was Richmond Hill's turn to bat, they soon found out that chasing 204 runs was not going to be easy, although it was an excellent batting wicket. A fantastic opening spell by Colville Brown broke Richmond backbone early. He captured Richmond Hill's first four wickets for 31 runs in his 8 overs. Three spectacular catches by Mahadeo Bodoe didn't make it any easier for the Richmond Hill batsmen either. He took catches to dismiss Royo Sankar, Hassan Ali and Imran Ali. The later two, off successive balls at first slip. This was followed by some top quality spin bowling by Premnath Ramnath, Indar Persaud and Mahadeo Bodoe also.

Despite scores of 36, 33 and 20 from Debo Sankar, Dereck McDonald and David Fingal respectively, Richmond Hill batsmen were never comfortable against Trinidad's bowling attack. They were soon bundled out for 111 runs. Trinidad winning the match by 93 runs and capturing the Nassau Cricket League 2001 Super 4 Championship.

The two architects of Sandra's Travel - Trinidad Sports Club, Dillip Ramkisson and Sheldon Gomes, were two very proud individuals at the end of the match.

All in all it was a wonderful day for cricket. It was a well-played cricket match. Many thanks to umpires Stephen Kalloo and Fitzroy Hayles for their excellent officiating.

The Nassau Cricket League would like to thank Western Union for sponsoring this year final and for their support throughout the 2001 cricket season.
