Building
a Successful Sporting Organization.
By Vish Lekhram.
Contrary to public opinion money, money, and more
money is not the only ingredient in building a successful sporting
organization. It is built through hard work, dedication, complete
commitment, vision (not the tunnel type), community commitment, loyalty,
honesty, integrity, planning, proper coordination, an unbiased and
unimpaired judgment and most importantly the cooperation of all officers
and members of the organization towards achieving that most singular
objective, of success.
Of course, a little money helps.
The individual with the foremost authority is and must be the President
of any organization. If not you will have chaos and anarchy. The President
is elected and entrusted by the members of that organization to chart
it is progress and achieve all the objectives in an unbiased, efficient
and cost effective manner. He must be a President of all the members
of that organization, regardless of the disposition, favorable or
unfavorable of those members.
However, that is easier said than done. The President faces tremendous
challenges from all the stakeholders of that organization, is constantly
being bombarded by various factions and parties for special privileges,
and favors most times completely outside the ambit of his/her authority
as well as being illegal and unconstitutional. It is his/her job to
conduct all of the organization's business in a fair and equitable
manner balancing all the pros and cons of each and every decision.
This most onerous of tasks is not made easier by his very internal
support group of executive officers who often (more times than not)
acts outside their areas or spheres of authority by making promises
and issuing ultimatums to other officers including the President and
members of that organization. Not excluding the false promises and
deeds of these officials, who simply and for no sensible purpose just
want to increase their personal feeling of importance and involvement?
These foolhardy acts are both unnecessary and uncalled for. All it
does is to create disunity and disenchantment.
In any academic discussion on Teamwork, Motivation and Group Equilibrium
one learns that there must be clear and concise channels of command
and authority or the synergy of the group will not be as cohesive
or productive as it could be. This is where the Leadership abilities
of the President or Leader of that organization acting forcefully
and decisively will keep all the members "pulling" in the
same direction.
Then there are the external forces that for want of a better or competitive
advantage over the organization on both a personal and general level
seek actively and passively to disrupt the smooth and even flow of
the organization. The president then must always be conscious of both
pull and push factors in trying to build this successful sporting
organization.
In the New York area and in fact in the whole of Continental United
States, the Nassau-New York Cricket Association (NNYCA) is one of
the foremost, successful sporting organizations around despite all
the negatory influences from both internal and external disruptive
elements. This organization has been a success for most if not all
of the very reasons outlined in this article. I salute President Paul
Da Silva for his skills and abilities in making this unit as successful
as it is. Of course, all the members of the NNYCA that have helped
and who will continue to do so share in this glory as well.
This association with limited grounds, facilities and resources have
produced cricket of an outstanding standard in both the traditional
and nontraditional forms. President Da Silva along with entrepreneurs
like the Singh brothers of Singh's Sporting Goods, Professor Gerald
Singh, hardworking vice-president Parasram, Alan Mohabir of the Chateau
Royal cricket team, Lenny Ramsaroop of the Hempstead group, Dean Mustapha-Alli,
Coach Rampersaud and the Trinidad Posse, not forgetting the experienced
Mustaq Khan along with countless and nameless others who have all
contributed in this success.
They have given unselfishly of their time, effort, and resources,
sometimes personally and at great familial sacrifices and sufferings.
This synergistic unit has taken the traditional forms of the game
and come up with interesting ideas like the two day game, split sessions
of play, as well as being one of the leaders pioneering the under
19 and 25 areas of cricket.
They have received support from numerous local and other business
partners whose contributions have been well received and much appreciated.
Without these tangible and intangible forms of support the association
cannot continue moving forward at the rate of success that it has
been moving.
What is new for this season: Schools and Youth cricket and the limited
over weekday night cricket. So watch out for these events and support
this successful sporting association in any way you can as well support
the glorious game of cricket in the NY and USA. God bless NNYCA and
keep the good things "rolling."
